A halogen-free type will normally have a larger cell structure, which gives the material a coarser cell structure. Therefore, one has to think a little differently when installing halogen-free cellular rubber.

Bonding of halogen-free cellular rubber insulation

Halogen-free insulation is, as the saying goes, free of halogens. In case of fire, the product emits little toxic smoke, thus eliminating possible toxic problems. This also means that halogen-free cellular rubber without halogens, such as bromides and chlorides, must be handled during installation in a manner other than standard cellular rubber insulation. Halogen-free cellular rubber will normally have larger cells than cellular rubber with microcells. Larger cells will naturally require more glue, which in turn can give longer venting time. Therefore, calculate a longer drying time before mounting the joints. Remember to check that the glue does not pull threads before the joint is pressed together.

Avoid UV rays on cellular rubber both outdoors and indoors

Halogen-free cellular rubber insulation is used on installations both indoors and outdoors. If the insulation is exposed to UV radiation, either outdoors or indoors, the surface may become dry and brittle over time. This reduces the mechanical properties of the product, so that it can withstand less loads. UV irradiation takes place via direct sunlight, via window glass, but also via lamps and fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent tubes emit artificial light that produces shortwave UV rays. One consequence of the insulation being dry is that small cracks appear in the surface of the cellular rubber. This leads to the product's properties, such as thermal conductivity and fire properties, may be damaged.

Reduce the risk of material stresses

When halogen-free cellular rubber plates are mounted on pipes, stresses can easily arise in the material and in the adhesive joint due to the bend around the pipe. A plate does not have the natural bend that a hose has. When a plate is bent around the pipe, the material skin will tighten. The voltages increase as the thickness of the insulation increases and the pipe diameter decreases. The glue is not intended to ensure that the glue joint holds mechanically, but is only intended to "cold weld" the joint so that it is as tight as the material itself. This with regard to moisture and diffusion.

Stresses can also cause the material to crack / crack and crack. When using hoses, this has a natural bend and is not exposed to the same material stresses as a plate. However, tension can also occur if you thread the hose over bends or connections. In such cases, a segment bend and sleeve must be made in the coupling. When plate insulation of larger pipes, it is natural to make two-part plate bends.

All mentioned cases to avoid stresses in the material and that glue joints open.
