Insulation requirements

The large product range can make it difficult to find the right product. We take a closer look at how to choose the right product and we will look at areas of use, requirements for the product, installation methods and documentation.

In marine and offshore, we offer a wide range of tested and approved products and constructions specially developed for this segment. The customer can choose between competitive solutions within, for example, fire, sound and thermal insulation and insulation of technical installations.

Where should the product be used?

To find the right product, it is necessary to know the area of use such as:

  • Fire insulation
  • Sound insulation
  • Thermal insulation
  • Insulation of technical installations
  • Liquid floor insulation
  • Insulation of subsea pipelines
  • A combination of e.g. fire and sound insulation

What product requirement is set?

When the area of use is known, the requirement for the product's properties must be considered, such as:

  • Fire properties
  • Sound properties
  • Thicknesses
  • Thermal conductivity
  • Mechanical strength
  • Water repellency

In some applications, weight must be taken into account. In this case, one can choose lightweight products, but it is not always the lightest product that gives the best result. Lightweights do not protect against noise in the same frequency band as the heavier products. Therefore, it is important to know what effect insulation should have and what result it should give.

All ROCKWOOL SeaRox products have good fire properties, but when these are used on ships or offshore rigs, it is necessary to choose the right product, which also meets the required fire classifications.

For marine and offshore, it is relevant to choose the product with the best properties, which i.a. water repellent properties. All ROCKWOOL SeaRox products have very low water absorption and ensure the best product properties, even in the future.

What methods should be taken into account?

Furthermore, it may be relevant to consider different solutions with regard to working and installation methods, depending on experience, cost and prioritization. The following parameters may be relevant:

  • Easy handling
  • Less cutting
  • Quick installation
  • Workload

Rockwool RTI has many certificates for the various products and certificates from classification societies based on fire tests performed at IMO approved fire institutes. When choosing a product, it is important to choose the product that is approved by the classification society and that will ultimately approve both the area of use and the new building.

Some customers prefer to work with plate constructions that ensure easy handling, while others, on the other hand, prefer to work with mesh mats. For some customers, it is important to have the best and most secure solutions, which are usually two-layer solutions but others focus on straight and easy installation.

What documentation do you need?

Finally, it is very important to focus on the right documentation:

  • Type approval
  • Certificate

When using Rockwool SeaRox insulation on board a vessel, make sure that the product has a MED certificate with approved steering wheel marking.

It is very important to ensure that the products and constructions have the right approval that is necessary in the specific project, such as that the product is non-combustible and has a low flame spread. The validity of the certificate should also be checked at that time.

To ensure the highest level of safety on board, one must also check whether the product and the plant have been tested in accordance with the latest standard of fire test procedure, IMO 2010 FTP Code.
